    Inspired by Jørgen Leth’s Black and White cult classic The Perfect Human (1968) which raises many simple yet philosophical questions about who the perfect human is, what it means to be human, or perfect, this work applies unsupervised machine learning and experimental filmmaking techniques to reexamine and question the contested notion of perfection in the eyes of artificial intelligence.     A Canadian Ghost Story: The Quilt for Joyce Wieland is a tribute to the films and other artwork of the late Joyce Wieland. It comprises a series of vignettes, each referencing the title of one of her films and picking up themes and motifs from her work. Two characters, A and B, are engaged in a somewhat mysterious and arduous endeavour surrounding Wieland’s films. Their memories of Wieland are stitched into a tale that is being told in a time of uncertainty and looming danger.     As Borges once said, “Censorship is the mother of metaphor.” This 16mm structural film explores how state control breeds its own linguistic and visual resistance. Created in response to China’s “zero-COVID” policy—with its harsh lockdowns, relentless testing, and severe restrictions that tragically culminated in the Ürümqi fire—this project treats developed image-less Ektachrome as an “unclean” object in need of cleansing. By applying chlorine dioxide to film surfaces—following government disinfection guidelines during the pandemic—the work transforms physical material into a metaphor for censorship and information control in mainland China.   • The Wind Probably

    A human is observing the deserted streets of his hometown on the edge of the Apocalypse. The world is on the verge of being absorbed by the Black Hole. Familiar places in the ruins are difficult to recognize and it’s hard to find the clues to understand is it a reality or dream. The sensation of “not quite real” is the sensation experienced during a catastrophe. In a person’s attempts to orientate the disintegrating reality, the only one with whom he can discuss what is happening is artificial intelligence.

  • Nihelious

    The work “Nihelious” is created from videos originally intended for the design of wedding movies. The angels, hearts, roses are all 3D computer graphics created in the early 2000s that were used as decoration, additional environments for commissioned wedding videos to enhance their aesthetics. The resulting video is the culmination of half a year of media archaeology, digging up and reviewing hundreds of gigabytes of footage. This is how the secondary characters of wedding DVDs came to the foreground and gained independence from their decorative function. And at this point the cute little angels began to show signs of monstrosity.

    Toronto 2012. Sotheby’s International Realty, a division of Sotheby’s Art Auction House, promotes a lakeside condo development using Impressionist-and-Surrealist-derived imagery. The ads on hoarding, billboards, and other media are often sexist and delve into the absurd: for instance, a ballet dancer doing a tour jeté underwater amongst a school of fish.     A poetry film based on Carol Barbour’s poem “Be Careful with Hope”, which was inspired by the Emily Dickinson poem “‘Hope’ is the Thing with Feathers.” The camera follows a woman moving through an urban nature site. She is mourning a loss and seeking to find hope again. She settles on a bench with a wide view of the surrounding landscape and opens a book that reveals a magical outcome.

    For as long as I can remember, it has been difficult and uncomfortable to express myself when speaking aloud or when writing. I would often silence myself to avoid the feeling that I was making a mistake, a word out of place or mispronounced, to avoid the embarrassment of repeating and having to clarify my thoughts.
