  • Gertrude & Alice in Passing

    This experiment in point of view, narrative structure, and time attempts to reproduce cinematically Gertude Stein’s notion of a “continuous present.” In four rhyming shots/scenes, it suggests the development of a relationship over many years. Based on biographical details from the lives of Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas, with improvised performances by Jackie Burroughs and Anne Anglin.

    Through found footage, The Space Shuttle Challenger entwines the Challenger disaster, Guantanamo Bay, Chile’s coup d’état and the experience of being 16. It reflects on the personal impact of large events in world history and small moments of hope that survive.

    When the universe began it erupted into a vast array of fundamental particles such as neutrons, electrons and protons. These particles decayed or combined over time to create everything that our senses perceive today while framing all the we desire and feel. Spark definition: An abrupt electrical discharge that occurs when a sufficiently high electric field creates an ionized, electrically conductive channel.     “Girl from Moush” is a poetic montage of the artist’s journey through her subconscious Armenia. It is not an Armenia based in a reality, but one which appears, like the mythical city of Shangri La, when one closes one’s eyes. Rooted in what Jung may call a “communal consciousness,” her Armenia appears on film as a collage of myth, legend, experience and immigration.   • Events in the Tunnel

    Drawn from Super 8 films in the artists’ personal archives as well as found amateur 8mm footage, “Events in the Tunnel” presents an absurdist abbreviated retelling of Canada’s colonial history as defined by that great colonial trope, the cross-country train trip. In the transitional void of a train tunnel, we witness familiar 19th and 20th century paradigms of white middle-class conformity as represented by images of travel, amusement, and domesticity, with Canadian culture embodied by a chimeric portrayal of the early 20th century painter Tom Thomson.

    [Être] was a thrift shop and eventually underground screening space in Montreal’s Mile End district. The space featured as its main attraction objects picked-up on garbage nights and accrued over many years by proprietor-curators Alek Gruszczynski et Ewa Zbroch.   • temporal assemblages

    temporal assemblages is an ecological video poem exploring human presence and absence in natural and built environments. Although the performers in the film are directed within the frame, the locations serve as canvasses for improvisation and the landscape is an equal player in the narrative of the scene. A meditation on impermanence and the transience of place, the title is inspired by assemblage art where fragments of existing artistic objects are reconstituted into new artworks.
