Under/Stand
Over 2500 hand drawn frames create a rotoscope animation of a figure that continuously climbs and falls from a bust of the artist. As the animated figure moves around the bust he exposes different parts of the artists own skin. The performance is an endless loop as he struggles to reach the top. His victory is short lived though as he stumbles shortly after he reaches the summit. After the fall he simply brushes himself and begins the climb again. “Under/Stand” is a looped installation, but it is also available as a 2.19 minute piece. Off Route 2
The scene of a car accident serves as a backdrop to an exploration of trauma and the often-anticlimactic aftermath of personal tragedy. A woman hangs inverted in silence, inhabiting the space of wildlife in the forest. This is as much a performance of endurance as it is a fictional construct; the execution of the film demanded that the artist hang upside-down from a seatbelt for extended periods of time in sub-zero weather.

BROKEN ANGEL (GEBROCHENGEL)
In Frankfurt near St. Peter’s church on Klaus-Mann-Platz, there is a memorial with an angel sculpture (aka Frankfurter Engel) for the homosexual men and women persecuted and murdered during the Third Reich. 2013 was a tumultuous year for LGBT rights like the spike in hate crimes in the U.S. post-DOMA, and passing of anti-gay legislation worldwide (most notably Russia and India). On 6 May 2013, the anniversary of Marlene Dietrich’s death and 80th year past the Third Reich, Stephen explores the historical and ongoing queer struggle and gilded apology of monuments in a guerilla performance by colliding the Frankfurter Engel…

The Lost World
With the aid of a USB microscope and X-ray scanners, this time-based media installation peers into the surface structure of decayed and rotted 35mm celluloid film like a drone flight reconnaissance mission flying over unknown enemy territory. Inspired by electronic surveillance data and Second World War Allied bombing raids on Dresden, the microscopic camera behaves as the trained eye of the bombardier, looking manually into the active areas of the film frame.

Visual Music for 10 Voices
In Barthes’ essay, “The Grain of the Voice”, the concept of the “genosong” was evoked to separate the sound of the voice from its language. Visual Music for Ten Voices distinguishes the physicality of the optical vocal track as having a unique identity from its actual resonance in sound films. Designed as a 10-foot black box projection loop, this film focuses on the rhythm and materiality of ten 35mm optical soundtracks. Each musical passage maintains its original length and linear harmony with the other tracks, collectively creating a new sense of motion and repetition.

Geriatrica
Geriatrica is a diminished landscape, both physical and mental. 90-year-old Maria pushes a medical walker down a nursing home corridor. A camera strapped to the walker tracks her movements. She was once a world traveler, but now the corridor defines the extent of her universe. Maria manages information like an exhausted swimmer treading water, grasping at the same few thoughts endlessly, never getting anywhere. All information is new, then rapidly sinks out of sight. Maria wants to die, but is no longer capable of doing anything about it. Geriatrica is about being lost forever in the now.
